I am an ardent supporter of continuous education but over the years I have noted that most of the people are consumed and obsessed with accumulation of Degrees at the expense of gaining skills and critical thinking. I speak from a position where I have accumulated Bachelors Degree, Chartered Management Accountant and Chartered Banker and two MBAs, a registered Risk Specialist. The truth is it’s Chartered Management Accountant qualification that really transformed my “education experience” and abit of MBA, the rest is an accumulation of Degrees and papers.
Employers will employ people or promote people based on skills, critical thinking and the value they bring to the organisation. This obsession of attaining Degrees does not help organizations to do well neither does it help one to deliver 5 star performance . Organizations perform if the people are skilled to do more than what is expected of them and not an accumulation of papers. Information is now available anytime and in abundance on your phone.
We need to continuously upskill ourselves by learning unlearning and relearning and being agile all the time and this does not mean you have to enrol for another Degree, you can do this by engaging with experts, on YouTube etc etc . The Degree just brings a bit of credibility and not performance.
Next time you plan for another 4th Degree think about the value it will add to your output!
